Wilsonville Coffee Co. Log

June 23rd, 2007

Sigh…

Just trying to come down off the caffeine high - Carolyn and Dave always hook me up with something über-caffeinated just after the show…

Jess and I had such a great time - playing with him is kinda like playing with no one - it’s totally natural…we keep each other in line - and it sounds WAY better than just me up there.

I came home and told my wife, Kathy, “Well, I don’t quite have 2 hours of original material…but we’re about 5 minutes away!” I guess I’ll just keep working up songs from February (more on that at a later time…)

Thanks to everyone who came out - it has been quite a while since we did the coffeehouse scene - Jess and I hope you enjoyed yourselves as much as we enjoyed entertaining.

There are some pictures that were taken that turned out pretty well - I met a professional photographer who said she’d send me some of the better photos - so stay tuned…I’ll add them to the gallery as soon as I get them.

So with the dawn of a new face expected around my house (baby Abigail is due VERY soon!), I thought I’d go ahead and update myfriendmike.com before life became a sleep-deprived haze of gray.

The things I’m most excited about the new style of website are:

  • You can comment directly on the site, which makes for a much more interactive experience for all of us!
  • My Event Schedule is easily accessed from most any page. Just click an event for more information!
  • You will be instantly notified via email when there’s new news and events! Not on the list? Want to take yourself off? Just visit the “Subscribe” Page.
  • I can EASILY post photos from shows without having to do all the HTML anymore (okay, so that one’s just for me…)
  • The blog and events are integrated right into the site (without having to visit myspace) and it just feels so much nicer.
  • Did I mention you can make comments right on the site? How cool is that?

Special thanks to Bruce H for helping me “see the light” and get me into the whole WordPress system of website design…

Okay - enough about that…

The NEWS to find out more about:

  • My wife and I are looking forward to the addition of Abigail Grace Haines sometime in July… Feel free to keep both of ‘my girls’ in your prayers.

Ministry isn’t always about Music…

November 2nd, 2006

And so they say, that if you put at least three or four words on the page, you can sit and type all night.  Well - with the “and so they say,” I have accomplished my first goal.

My second goal is to stop typing before the night passes me by.

Interestingly enough, I haven’t blogged (or gigged, for that matter) in a number of months.  I guess my “whole life’s ministry” will be pushed one direction or another depending on the circumstances.  For example, when my son was first born, I wasn’t really making a whole lot of phone calls to set up gigs for a little while.

And now, my ministry to my family has won out over the music side of things once again.  The house is becoming a home.  BeLIEVE me, I will NOT want to move for at LEAST 10 years after I am through with all the work I have put into the house.  So - for those of you who stumble upon my ramblings and are still reading, here is what has happened in my house since June 20, 2006..

The Kitchen: completely torn out and put back in a more friendly configuration (with mostly new stuff (we kept the stove and microwave (but we bought those last year))).  [Nice - I just nested three parentheses…]  New flooring, lights, cabinets, countertops, sink, fridge, dishwasher - and all the plumbing and ductwork and nailing and painting and screwing and wallboarding and sanding and and and etc. that goes along with all that…I thank everyone who came over to help - especially my Dad - we got some SERIOUS father-son bonding time in while my folks were in town.

The Windows: we had people come install new windows (they rule!) and since Kathy and I wanted to re-trim the entire house, we thought this might be a good time to do that.  SO - after the windows were installed, we (I) primed and painted all the window-jams white and cut new “fun” trim to replace our old plain trim, and hung and painted that white as well.

The REST of the Trim: This is what I’m still working on - I have taken off all the doors, painted them white, painted the jams white and put the doors back on - with new hinges and AWEsome new doorknobs.  Now I’m taking out and replacing the trim around the doors, taking off the baseboards and cutting (where necessary - the new “fun” trim is wider than the old plain trim, so the baseboards next to doors doesn’t fit anymore) and painting all the baseboards before I finally re-install them.  Do that to every room in the house and I’m mostly done…mostly.

The Exterior of the House:   Well, somewhere in there, my family got the job done - special thanks to my “other dad” - my father in law, painter extraordinaire - what used to be yellowish-brown is now a nice blue with grey undertones.  It’s kind of denim blue…with white gutters and trim… The front door which used to be brownish-yellow is now red.  Kathy always wanted a red door.

I guess I learned something today - or over the past few months…As I follow God’s lead in my life, sometimes I won’t be doing what I think I should be doing - and sometimes God will surprise me with a new “song in my heart” because I choose to follow His lead rather than my own.  And I wouldn’t trade that song, or that feeling of peace, for anything.  Cuz you and I both know I’d rather be playing guitar than hanging wallboard.  Or sanding.  Yeah…I hate sanding…

Well, after all this is finished, I guess I’ll relax on the house projects - at least for a little while.  I should record again.  I’ve still been writing down songs…feel free to come out to my church to hear one every now and again (but you usually have to get there early…I mostly play them before the service begins…mostly).

Okay - enough already…25 minutes has passed me by and I still need to go to bed.

Blessings.

Dublin Pub CD Release Party Part 2

May 1st, 2006

Monday, May 1, 2006 - 7pm
Dublin Pub - Portland, Oregon
“Write ‘em Down…Again” CD Release Party #2

“At least he was listening,” my wife commented, when I told her of a fellow who thought I sang about “Jesus and the Lord” a little too much…

Ah, the Dublin Pub. I really enjoy playing there, for a number of reasons. One, I’ve played there so many times, it’s comfortable. Two, I really like the staff - they’re super nice! Three, I know there are people around who need to hear the message of God’s love - whether they realize it or not…

So, it was Poker Night at the Dublin…the same time as the CD Release Party. Poker players are serious cats. Jess and I were happy to see so many friends, neighbors, and family come out to celebrate the CD Release. Even my across the street neighbor (whom Jess invited!) came out to listen. The fellow landscapers had lots to talk about between sets.

Special Thanks to Katie for letting us play! Also thanks to Jill for passing the notebook around, and to the many folks who took all sorts of pictures - they even got some good ones of MyFriendAngie, who I thank for being my “merch expert.” Y’all rock!

My prayer is that the Message falls on willing ears, and readied hearts. If you were at this event, please drop me a line, or share a comment. Hope you enjoy the pictures in the gallery!

The Wilsonville Coffee Co CD Release Party

April 29th, 2006

Friday, April 28, 2006 - 7pm
Wilsonville Coffee Co.
“Write ‘em Down…Again” CD Release Party

Ever have a “surreal day?” You know, the kind that everything just falls into place as you go through the motions to make it all happen? Well, I kinda had one of those today. I guess it’s a true testament to how everything good that happens comes from Above.

In preparing for this CD Release evening, I had a whole lot on my mind. I was excited that my parents had come to town for a couple weeks during this time, not only to see our son, but to celebrate the release of this album…I love them so much! It was the first time I got to use all the “new stuff” I put together for a display/sales table…I had changed so many words and choruses for this recording, I practiced out loud in the days leading up to this evening…(for those of you who don’t know, I have a hard time remembering words…I blame it on the fact that I learned all the words to REM’s “Its the End of the World as we Know It…”)

Anyway…earlier in the afternoon, my Mom asked if I was excited about this evening…and it was kinda weird, because I couldn’t really say honestly that I was… Deep down, I guess I was - but I didn’t really get it until it was over.

Can I just say, that I am blessed to have such a wonderful group of people who are into the music I play? Everyone that showed up affirmed God’s calling to this ministry of music, whether it was to check things out - or family and friends who knew what they were getting into. I thank God for all of you. Your support allows this ministry to survive. Thank you SO much for blessing me with your presence. I would be like a “tree in the forest” without you! I pray that God does amazing things with the music He rains on me. Every good and perfect gift DOES come from Above.

I’m looking forward to playing at the Dublin Pub on Monday Night - hey! I’m kinda excited! That’s cool - seeing as it’s WAY late Friday night! God’s blessings to you all…

-Mike

On an inspirational note

Local songwriter Mike Haines draws upon a higher source for inspiration

Christian singer-songwriter Mike Haines will play music from his new CD “Write Em Down Again.”

For Christian songwriter and musician Mike Haines, a Slinky is not just a toy - it has music in it.
He gave a brief tutorial on the craft of Slinky playing: hold the top several coils in your hand, then move them up and down like an accordion to produce a metallic “shaluunk.”
“It is a great percussion instrument,” he said. “It sounds real nice.”
So does his $5 bongo that he found on the clearance rack at T.J. Maxx.
Using these items, and more traditional ones such as a guitar, Haines began making original music for the first time. He wrote his own lyrics and melodies, played all the instruments, sang the songs and even crudely recorded them on a home audio workstation.
Haines has always been musically inclined. In high school he played the piano, trumpet, French horn and drums, just to name a few.
He graduated from college with a degree in music business.
For his next crop of songs, Haines ditched the Slinky and created a more professional quality compact disc titled “Write Em Down.”
The title is a subtle reference to Haines belief that his music ultimately comes from God.
“I dont really write my songs,” he said. “I just write them down.”
After releasing his first CD, Haines set out to rerecord his original songs. His CD release party, titled “Write Em Down Again,” will take place at the Wilsonville Coffee Company from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, April 28.
His songs cover a diverse range of styles. One song sounds like Green Day. Another song has a swing beat.
“I allow the music that I have been listening to influence me,” he said. “Inspiration comes from everywhere.”
But one thing is the same in every one of his songs since Haines is a Christian musician, they all deal either directly or indirectly with God.
“There is a definite message,” Haines said. “And that is that God made us, God loves us, God saves us through Jesus Christ and then we get to live under that and struggle with that, ask questions that is what a lot of the songs are about.”
One song on the new CD is especially meaningful for Haines. It is the song he used to propose to his wife, Kathy.
Haines says that before he wrote the song he had a conversation with God.
“I was kind of like, Well God, when the right woman comes along at the right time, I am sure the song will appear,” he said.
When he wrote the song “I Want To Be,” which is the fourth song on the CD, he knew that the time was right. He asked Kathy to meet him at the pub where he played for an hour every Monday night.

“When God made
music, He knew what
He was doing.”

-Mike Haines

Christian singer-songwriter

“I asked her to come up and she sat on a stool and I sang her the song, got down on one knee and proposed in front of everyone,” Haines said.
She said yes. Now they have a young son and Haines is a full-time, stay-at-home dad.
He is currently networking with churches and youth groups in the area that might be interested in his music and his message.
“I am a resource in the area, if they need somebody to provide what I like to call spiritual entertainment,” Haines said.
He says he probably has enough material to record another CD.
He also has a book full of ideas for children songs that he may or not get around to finishing.
Whatever happens, Haines will continue to use his music as a way to spread a Christian message.
“Music is a powerful, powerful thing. When God made music, he knew what he was doing,” Haines said.

They’re HERE!

At long last… What was just a bunch of ones and zeros on my hard drive has turned into, like 500 real actual CDs - I got to pick them up TODAY!

Now on to the next big effort - getting them into the hands and CD players of as many as possible, without going broke in the process…

I’m totally stoked - the CD itself looks WAY cool…and I pray the ones and zeros touch the hearts of the listener with the amazing love of God…after all, that’s what this record is about…

Blessings to all who read this!

Ideas, Ideas, Ideas…

April 6th, 2006

(Taken from my MySpace Blog…)

So I’m thinking about using this space to log - I guess, Blog - thoughts from any shows I do… or maybe just thoughts as I ramble on through this mess that is music promotion.

I feel like I’m pretty good at the music side of things. I lay on the edge of the creative cliff, always waiting to fall off…I enjoy the excitement of creating something out of nothing but thoughts and inspiration. I REALLY enjoy hearing those creations by simply pressing a button - or clicking on a friend’s MySpace page…that is TOTally cool.

I find myself, at least lately, trying to give this ministry some STRUCTURE. And that, my friends, I am NOT very good at this part.

There’s this whole “marketing” end of things - and SO many ideas come to mind:

  • Phone Calls
  • MySpace Updating
  • Meetings with Church leaders
  • Allowing others to help - and ALL the ways they can do that
  • MyFriendMike.com updating
  • Flyers
  • Pictures and photoshoots
  • And SO much more…
  • I guess it all comes down to keeping it simple and effective. But how does one go about that? Certainly not by sitting around all day blogging. :)

Well - I think, for starters, I’m going to move my “Tour Log” over to MySpace. So there may be some “pre-post-dates” that appear from past events. For those three of you who are currently subscribed to my blog, prepare yourselves! For those of you who are not, or have joined later - welcome aboard - jump in to the world of Mike’s head…hopefully it will never get too big for his shoulders.

    It’s all about sharing God’s love…

Blessings to all who read this rambling…

    -Mike
